Welcoming The Corby Plus Wifi – The Samsung Ch@t B3410W
The world’s number 2 mobile phone giant Samsung got to unveil an updated B3410 Corby Plus feature phone with the new Samsung Ch@t B3410W during the last Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona. It’s another affordable entry level full QWERTY slider feature phone that is the exact twin of the Corby Plus released in October last year. This time, it has WiFi – a feature that was quite common in many handsets for the last 2-3 years which Samsung could easily have incorporated on the Corby Plus but deliberately left out so it could come out with an “improved” version this time around.
We sort of missed the time when mobile phone makers would release improved versions of the same banana with features that were not available when they were released. Samsung could have made a more laudable effort improving the handset with a Bluetooth 3.0 that was not available in October.
More of the Same
The Ch@t is a Corby Plus with WiFi. Having said that, listing its feature set is just a review of that the Corby Plus has.
- It’s the same QWERTY slider measuring 102.3 x 52.4 x 16.2 mm and registering the same 113.7g weight. That clearly tells you the added WiFi chipset makes no dent on its heft and mass. You get the same 2G speeds on a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio. The added WiFi 802.11b/g with its 54 MBps speeds compared with EDGE speeds of 238 Kbps makes your social networking and HTML browsing a satisfying experience on the road. You get the same high speed local data transfers with Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0.
- There’s the same decent 2.6-inch LCD TFT resistive touchscreen with QVGA resolution and 256k colors as well as a scratch resistant surface. You get the same outdated 2 megapixel fixed focus camera with QVGA video recording. Mobile entertainment gets the same media players, an FM stereo receiver with RDS, DNSe for sound enhancement and the same stereo listening options for wired headset on the 3.5mm audio jack or wireless using its Bluetooth A2DP support.
- You get the same 45 MB internal memory plus phonebook capacity for up to 1,000 entries and there’s microSD memory expandability for up to 16 GB. A 960 mAh Li-Ion battery used in the Corby Plus brings a reduced talk time of 7.5 hours compared to the Corby’s 10.6 hours. WiFi could account for that.
- The Corby’s SNS apps that enable live updates to Facebook, MySpace and media sharing sites like Flickr and YouTube, and widgets on the TouchWiz home screen for instant access to SNS sites finally becomes useful with WiFi on Ch@t.
Availability
We doubt if Colby Plus owners would upgrade to this one on the strength of a feature that should have been there in the first place. If ever, people who haven’t bought a Corby Plus should wait for this one instead of settling with a handicapped Corby Plus. Unfortunately, the Samsung Ch@t B3410W has no definitely timeframe for release and has been announced as merely coming soon.
It could be next month or Christmas of 2010, or even never. Perhaps Samsung is waiting to continue duping its markets with an inferior Corby Plus just long enough to release the more able Ch@t. The Corby Plus now retails for around €150 so we don’t see the Ch@t to be anywhere higher than this for a handset that should have been the Corby Plus in the first place.
