Some Men and Minds in Photography

Tiphaigne de la Roche, Charles- François is a medical doctor and a French author whose novel “Giphantie” published in 1760 is considered to have given the prediction on photography.

Hershell, Sir John Frederick William, a well known astronomer and a publisher of influential books on astronomy is the first to quote the word “photography” in his “Note on the art of Photography, or The Application of the Chemical Rays of Light to the Purpose of Pictorial Representation”.

Niépce, Joseph Nicephore is the very first to produce a product of photography, a successful photograph on June or July of 1827. This first produced picture required an eight hours of long exposure giving the sun to move from east to west to give light on all sides of his subject which is said to be difficult to figure out.

Daguerre, Louis Jacques Mande who began working as an apprentice architect, learned about Niépce’s work on 1826,got interested, and finally made a partnership with him on 1829. After Niépce’s death, he continued to do experimentation and discovered the development of photographic plates. Through his unsurmountable and great contribution in photography, particularly the so called “Daguerreotype” which is a photographic process, he is considered to be the most famous man in this field.

Paul Delaroche, a painter, became the influential advertiser of the Daguerreotype for having reported the invention and the details of process to the French government. He became famous with his line saying, “from today, painting is dead!”.

Talbot, William Henry Fox made his own contribution to photographic process making it a rival to the Daguerreotype. He experimented on how to make pictures through the use of mechanical method, and used camera obscura which is a dark box or room with a hole in one end, and camera lucida which is a reflecting prism in drawing outlines in correct perspective.
