Best digital camera for outside/night shots?

I’m off to New York next month, and want to get some great pictures (Scenery shots mainly, day and night), but my current camera is only good for facial close-ups, and is utterly useless at night time. I’m not a serious photographer, i just want some good quality shots to remember the trip by. Anyone have any pointers?
