I need a camera for my 14 year old doing nature photography as a hobby?

I'm looking for a device for my son's photo 14 years of age would be ideal for nature photography and playing with friends. A'lot passes hiking, walking and snowboarding when not playing a sport, and likes to take pictures of nature when on the road. It has an old digital camera that gave last summer, and if it works well again, I would buy something a nice little Christmas this year. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My budget is capped at $ 500. I, of course, prefer not to spend so much, and never have a problem buying used. I would like a camera that is fast approaching so you can take photos of wildlife also. I was thinking of a digital SLR but there are so many options in many PBS projects, that information can get overwhelming.
